FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a standard network protocol used for the transfer of computer files between a client and server on a computer network. Originating in the early 1970s, FTP enables users to upload, download, and manage files on a remote server, facilitating data exchange and storage management across diverse systems. Operating on the client-server model, FTP uses separate control and data connections between the client and the server. The protocol supports various modes of data transfer, including active and passive modes, to accommodate different firewall and NAT configurations. While traditional FTP does not encrypt data, secure variants like FTPS (FTP Secure) and SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) provide encrypted channels for enhanced security. FTP is widely used for website management, software distribution, and networked file storage.
